Where does AI actually belong in an accountancy firm?

Usually in the document-heavy, repetitive work behind audit, tax, payroll and client onboarding. Rarely in the judgement.

The short answer

The honest answer is that it belongs in the document-heavy, repetitive work behind audit, tax, payroll and client onboarding, and almost never in the judgement your clients are actually paying for. The win is hours returned to fee-earners, not a machine doing the thinking.

We start with workflow analysis rather than tooling. Which processes are high volume, rule-based and document-led? Where is the same information being retyped between systems? That map is what decides whether you need a custom build or a feature you are already paying for in your practice software.

Workflow analysis first

Across audit, tax, payroll and onboarding, before anyone mentions a tool.

Custom build or off the shelf

Usually off the shelf. We will tell you when a tool you already own does the job.

Document-heavy work

Extraction, routing and checking, where the volume genuinely is.

Client onboarding

The bottleneck most firms feel first, and the easiest to measure.

What not to automate

Judgement, advice and the relationship. Naming this early builds trust internally.

A roadmap, not a rebuild

Sequenced so the first thing delivered pays for the next.

FAQ

Common questions

Will AI replace work our accountants do?

Not the work clients pay for. The realistic target is the document handling, data entry and chasing that sits around the advice, which is where the hours leak. We are explicit about what should stay human, because that is what gets a team to adopt it.

Do we need a custom build?

Usually not. Most practice management and audit platforms already include automation that is switched off or unused. We check that first. Recommending a tool you already pay for costs us a project and saves you a lot, which is the correct trade.

How do you handle client confidentiality?

It is the first constraint, not an afterthought. Workflow design starts from what data may leave your environment and what may not, and that rules certain tools out before we assess anything else.

Where do firms usually start?

Client onboarding. It is high volume, rule-based, visible to the client, and the time saved is easy to measure, which makes the second project much easier to approve.
